We’re looking for a Saturday Grocer.

We’re looking for a Saturday Grocer.

We’re looking for an active and hardworking person to join the Cultivate team as our Saturday Grocer and look after our brand new Botley stop. Our Saturday Grocer will be a confident driver with a full, clean licence, able to get out to our depot in Little Wittenham and preferably have experience driving a van.

They’ll be self-reliant and unflappable. They’ll get a kick out of selling amazing produce and building relationships with our loyal and brand new customers. They’ll be willing to learn a great deal of ever-changing seasonal veg knowledge to impart to customers and they’ll relish the physicality of hauling around crates of veggies. They will share Cultivate’s vision for a flourishing local food scene in Oxford.

Cultivate Oxford is a food cooperative with over 400 members based in Little Wittenham. Cultivate supplies local, ethical and delicious food to Oxford and surrounding communities via our mobile greengrocer shop (the VegVan), and at our market stall grocery. At each of our stops customers can expect the same special service and amazing array of fresh and local vegetables, fruit and produce. We currently operate across 5 stops: East Oxford, Jericho and Botley which are run from the VegVan; Headington and Summertown that operate under a gazebo in a traditional market stall set up.

The Role
As a Cultivate Grocer you will be responsible for driving our VegVan from our depot in Little Wittenham to our newest stop in Botley outside SS Peter and Paul and setting up to spend the day selling our produce. You’ll be responsible for speaking with customers, keeping displays looking great and creating a buzz around the stop. You’ll be part of a positive, high-energy, hardworking team who, through selling veg, act as ambassadors for Cultivate and for good local food. The Grocer is the key link in the chain, offering and selling our local produce to local people in such a way that we build and grow great customer loyalty and a financially sustainable future for our co-operative.

You’ll be passionate about spreading the word about good food, and passionate about building community. You’ll be the main face of our Botley stop and have the chance to really help us develop this new location. You’ll be happy working all hours necessary including evenings, and capable of handling the physically demanding work of moving heavy boxes of vegetables. You’ll be part of our sales team and will help us reach our monthly sales targets, and ideally up for helping provide the occasional holiday/sickness cover for other grocer shifts (paid extra of course!). You’ll have a good eye for ensuring all produce is fresh and beautifully displayed, and will also feel at home chatting to customers about where the produce comes from, how to cook it, and about Cultivate’s mission. We will provide full training in all of the above.

You’ll be a natural when it comes to problem-solving and time management, and will remain cool as a cucumber when confronted with occasional unexpected veg-related crises!
Our Grocers are an integral part of the Cultivate family, and are encouraged to take ownership of their role and to develop their skills and talents within Cultivate. For example, one of our first Grocers has taken on a much larger role within Cultivate, and is now our Operations Manager.
