Hello again or welcome to the Cultivate Online weekly newsletter if you’re a first timer!
After a brief sunny spell, it’s got rather cold again this week in our depot, ‘The Grain Store’ at the Earth Trust (yes, it is an old grain store!), so we’ve been layering up and drinking lots of tea!
On the land, we’ve been putting the finishing touches to our lovely pergola. If you pop down to visit this Saturday 10-4pm for our Volunteer Day then you can sit under it and enjoy our volunteer’s fine craftsmanship. We’ve also been installing fencing around the polytunnels in a bid to keep out all the small (and sometimes very large!) critters that want to eat our vegetables! Our 2-wheeled tractor ‘Don Pasquale’ has been busy prepping the ground ready for planting in the next few weeks and we decided to re-sow carrot seed after some poor germination in the tunnel. Our farm manager, Joe, had an interesting day on Monday on the Tolhurst Organic Farm near Reading doing a soil analysis workshop and learning skills he hopes to put to good use through the conversion period to full organic certification.
Others in our team delivered Culti-veg to the wonderful pop-up Monday Shop that runs every Monday 4-8pm at East Oxford Community Centre selling fresh, local and ethically sourced produce. We also attended a meeting to plan the launch of the Oxford Food Waste Café and we got very excited by the prospect of the Oxford team following in the footsteps of enlightened movers and shakers in Leeds, Brighton, Bristol and other cities who have set up pay-as-you-can-afford cafes serving food made only from waste food- amazing stuff! I’ll keep you posted on any developments.
