Turning the First Sod!
On Saturday 10th March we’re hosting a farm launch day at the Earth Trust in Little Wittenham for members and prospective members. Please extend this invitation to anyone you think might be interested.
The event will see the first forks hit the soil, to mark the start of the veg-growing operation that will stock our Veg Van from June. While we don’t stand on ceremony, this will be our version of the traditional ‘turning of the first sod’ or ‘groundbreaking’ ritual. We’re not planning on getting an engraved bronze shovel done quite yet, but posing for a mass photograph is definitely on the cards.
The day also marks the official start of our Farm Step tenancy – a partnership with the Earth Trust that we think will bring great things in the future. Keep an eye on the blog for more on this soon.
Order of events:
12-1pm – local lunch
Please join us for soup, bread and cheese, all locally sourced. Places are limited for this part of the day, so please RSVP to email@example.com.
1pm-3pm – on the farm
Activities will include a guided tour, bean planting, seed sowing, rabbit fencing and a Big Dig – where we hope everyone will join in with helping turn over the soil to prepare it for planting this season. Finishing with tea and cakes. No need to RSVP for this part – the more the merrier.
Wellingtons or heavy boots are highly recommended for the second part of the day (we’re on a sticky clay soil!) and volunteers wishing to take part in the ‘Big Dig’ are asked to bring their own spade or other digging implement.
Details on how to get to the Earth Trust can be found here.
Car sharing – we’d like to encourage as many people to share lifts as possible to enable everyone to get down to the farm, and to cut emissions. When RSVP’ing please indicate if you either need transport or could offer a lift. Please give details or where you’ll be travelling from, when you’ll be heading off and how many spaces you have/need – we’ll do the rest.
Marquees – just in case it rains, we’d love to be able to put up a marquee/shelter in the field – does anyone have one we could borrow? Please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
See you there!
